United Ostomy Association (UOAA)
The United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) is a national network for bowel and urinary diversion support groups in the United States. Patient Visiting and Support Services The Visiting Program was the flagship program of the United Ostomy Association. Although UOA has shut down, nearly all of UOA’s former chapters continue to provide a Visiting Program. This has offered person-to-person support to people undergoing ostomy or related surgery, as well as their family members, so they can achieve optimal physical and social rehabilitation.
A visitor is an experienced, adjusted, and trained person who has been determined to be qualified to visit, who participates in recertification training regularly, and who maintains membership in an ostomy support group. This includes both rehabilitated patients and members of their family unit.
Visitors are careful to comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rules (effective as of April 2003) when obtaining referrals from medical personnel.
Visits can be made during the hospital stay, in the home or some other convenient location. Phone visits are becoming the most common type due to the short hospital stay.
To schedule a visit, you may contact one of the former UOA Chapters or one of the former UOA Networks.
